To a Holy Martyr of the Church

Oh! Most glorious saints, so brave and so true,
These few lines are written to you.
Your steadfast valor in times of great need,
Is written in books for us to read.
How could you remain so brave and so loyal?
In the midst of the terrible pagan turmoil
Our Lord, Our Savior, His praises you sing,
Forever to Christ, Our Heavenly King,
The Holy Spirit gave strength to your soul,
To cope with earth’s trials and hardships and woe.
All through your life you strived to attain,
The friendship of God, not power or fame.
And when trouble arrived, God’s love filled your mind.
You always were, to your captures, good and kind.
They asked you to deny your Faith, but instead,
You told them that you would rather be dead,
Then deny the Religion that, to your soul, gave life,
To battle, with kindness, all hatred and strife.
The peace of your heart could be conquered by none.
So, you gave up your life for faith in God’s son,
And now you, with the angels in heaven adore,
The most Blessed Trinity forever more.

Timeless Gallantry

St. Perpetua's story is one of true sacrifice and bravery. This martyr was taken prisoner by Roman soldiers while attending a Christian meeting. She and her companions were thrown into prison by these cruel pagans. During her bondage, her father came often, trying to sway her determination to hold fast to her faith in Christ. But it was useless. Next, Perpetua was ordered, by a Roman authority to offer a pinch of incense to an idol. Upon refusing to do so, our saint was cast back into and told she would be thrown to wild beasts in the arena the following day. When the fateful morning dawned, she and her comrades faced their death courageously. When a bull was sent to charge at her it only wounded her. A Roman executioner was called forth to end her life by the sword. St. Perpetua's body fell lifeless but her soul soared like a dove to her Lord and Savior who welcomed her with open arms. The accounts of the lives of the martyrs are timeless and filled with gallant men and women who were granted strength to die for God.

St. Perpetua pray for us!
